Haiyan Guan successfully passed her PhD Comprehensive Oral Exam (November 30, 2011)
   Haiyan Guan, the 1st-year PhD student successfully passed her PhD Comprehensive Oral Exam on
   Wednesday, 30 November 2011. Congratulations, Haiyan! The examining committee was chaired by
   Dr. Douglas Dudycha and included 5 examiners, Dr. Costas Armenakis (external reader), Associate
   Professor at the Department of Earth and Space Science and Engineering, York University, Professor
   Mike Chapman at the Department of Civil Engineering, Ryerson University, Prof. Richard Kelly, Dr.
   Su-Yin Tan and Prof. Jonathan Li at the Department of Geography and Environmental Management.
   Haiyan will conduct a research project on "3D Building Facade Reconstruction from Mobile Laser
   Scanning Data" under co-supervision of Professors J. Li and M. Chapman in the upcoming 2-3 years
   at the University of Waterloo.

Prof. Li appointed Chair of FIG Working Group 4.4 (2011-2014) (November 12, 2011)
   The Council of the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG) has appointed Professor Jonathan Li as
   Chair of Working Group 4.4 on Maritime and Marine Spatial Information Management for the term
   (2011-2014). The FIG WG4.4 consists of two Study Groups, named Study Group 4.4.1 on Marine Spatial
   Data Infrastructure chaired by Dr. Bheshem Ramlal, University of the West Indies, TRINIDAD & TOBAGO;
   and Study Group 4.4.2 Remote Sensing of Coastal and Marine Waters chaired by Prof. Jonathan Li,
   University of Waterloo, CANADA. Within FIG Commission 4 Hydrography, there are a total of 5 working
   groups, the deteils about this commission can be found at http://www.fig.net/commission4/.

Haowen Yan successfully passed his PhD Comprehensive Examination (September 26, 2011)
   Haowen Yan, a 2nd year PhD student supervised by Prof. Jonathan Li, successfully passed his PhD
   Comprehensive Examination on Monday, 26 Sepember 2011. Congratulations, Haowen! The examining
   committee consisted of 4 examiners, including Dr. Jane Law (external reader), Assistant Professor at the
   School of Planning, Dr. Peter Deadman, Dr. Su-Yin Tan and Dr. Jonathan Li (Supervisor) at the
   Department of Geography and Environmental Management. The exam was chaired by Dr. Douglas
   Dudycha. Haowen will conduct a research project on "spatial similarities for cartographic map
   generalization", supervised by Prof. Jonathan Li in the upcoming 3 years at UW.

Yuanming wins 2010 CRSS Award for Best Master's Thesis (June 16)
   Yuanming Shu, a Waterloo geography and geomatics doctoral candidate under supervision of Prof.
   Jonathan Li at the UW Laboratory for Geospatial Mapping and Remote Sensing (GeoMARS Lab), recently
   received the 2010 Canadian Remote Sensing Society Award for Best Master's Thesis. The national-wide
   annual competition is open to all Master's students studying remote sensing in Canadian universities.
   Yuanming, who was working on developing a novel segmentation algorithm for effective detection of
   dark-spots in RADARSAT-1 imagery for tracking marine oil spills. The awards was presented at the
   Canadian Remote Sensing Society's 32nd Canadian Symposium on Remote Sensing that was held from
   June 13th to 16th in Sherbrooke, Quebec at Bishop's University campus. Congratulations, Yuanming!

Lucy Que Ren becomes an OGS scholarship (international) winner (May 20, 2011)
   Congratulations to Lucy Ren on winning an Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) with a total amount of
   $15,000 for the academic year of 2011-2012. In the year 2011, the Ontario Government provides a
   total of 3000 OGS scholarships, among which only 80 positions go to international graduate students.
   Lucy comes from Wuhan University and holds the B.Eng. degree in GIS. She is in her first year MSc study
   at UW and has been continuously one A and A+ MSc student in the five courses she has taken since
   September 2010. Her research work in use of topographic derivatives for digital soil mapping has been
   well recognized by the research scientists from the Agriculture and Agri-food Canada. As a recipient of
   the OGS scholarship, Lucy will also receive the UW President's Graduate Scholarship valued at
   $10,000/year. Congratulations once again, Lucy. You deserve it!

Tae-Jung Kwon successfully defended his master thesis (April 18, 2011)
   Congratulations to Tae-Jung Kwon, who successfully defended his master thesis on 18th April 2010. Tae
   has been a MSc student under supervision of Prof. Jonathan Li since September 2009. His MSc thesis is
   entitled "SAR Remote Sensing of Canadian Coastal Waters using Total Variation Optimization
   Segmentation Approaches ". The examining committee was formed by Prof. Jonathan Li (chair), Prof.
   Claude Duguay (reader), Dr. Su-Yin Tan (reader), and Prof. Richard Kelly (Thesis Committee member).
   Tae has accepted an offer for PhD study in the area of transportation engineering at the Department of
   Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Waterloo, starting from May 2011. Congratulations,

Prof. Li receives a 2011 Ford Bartlett Award (March 3, 2011)
   As indicated in the letter from Dr. Carolyn Merry, President of ASPRS, on February 24th, 2011, Prof. Li is
   one of the recipients of the 2011 Ford Bartlett Award for actively promoting memberships in ASPRS. The
   award carries with a hand-engrossed certificate and a one-year membership in the Society. Presentation
   of the award certificate will take place during the ASPRS 2011 Annual Conference in Milwaukee,
   Wisconsin, at the Awards Luncheon in the Frontier Airlines Center on Tuesday, May 3rd from 12:15 pm
   to 1:30 pm.   top

   Professor Carolyn J. Merry, President of ASPRS, sent a letter to Dr. Huayi Wu on March 1, 2011 that “As
   president of ASPRS, I have the pleasure of informing you that you and your co-authors Yong Li,
   Jonathan Li, and Jianya Gong are the First Honorable Mention winners for the 2011 Talbert Abrams
   Award for youracem paper entitled  “A Two Step Displent Correction Algorithm for Registration of
   LiDAR Point Clouds and Aerial Images without Orientation Parameters,” PE&RS, 76 (10), 1135 – 1145.
   The award consists of a hand-engrossed certificate. Presentation of the award certificate will take place
   during the ASPRS 2011 Annual Conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, at the Awards Luncheon in the
   Frontier Airlines Center on Tuesday, May 3rd from 12:15 pm to 1:30 pm.  Please be our guest”.
Talbert
   "Ted" Abrams (August 17, 1895 – August 26, 1990) is known as the "father of aerial photography". Every
   year, the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) presents the Talbert
   Abrams Award to a person who makes an outstanding contribution to aerial photography and mapping.
