About Dr. Li
Dr. Jonathan Li is an elected university senate member and a professor at the Department of Geography and Environmental Management, founding member of the Interdisciplinary Centre on Climate Change (IC3), member of the Water Institute and is Director of Waterloo Laboratory for GeoSpatial Technology and Remote Sensing (GeoSTARS Lab) in the Faculty of Environment at the University of Waterloo. In addition, he is a recipient of the prestigious Talbert Abrams Award (ASPRS, 2011), Ford Bartlett Award (ASPRS, 2011), ESRI Award for Best Scientific Paper in GIS (2008), MDA Award for Best Paper in Orthophotography, Photogrammetry and Surveying (2007), Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) New Opportunities Fund Award (2003), and two China's Science and Technology Progress Awards (1988, 1995).
He completed his PhD degree in Geomatics Engineering (specializing in remote sensing and GIS) at the University of Cape Town before beginning teaching in 2000 as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Geography, University of Regina followed by being an Assistant Professor and tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at Ryerson University. He has taught and designed more than ten courses from second year through to graduate level within the broader geomatics disciplines. He also serves as an external examiner at the PhD level for the University of Regina, University of Guelph, Ryerson University, University of New Brunswick, University of Windsor, York University, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and University of the Witwatersrand. He holds Chair Professorship at Hohai University and Tianjin University, Adjunct Professorship at York University and China University of ; Geosciences (Beijing), and Guest Professorship at Peking University, Wuhan University, Central South University, Changan University, Sichuan Normal University, and Lanzhou Jiaotong University.
Dr. Li's research interests lie mainly in the areas of remote sensing and geographical information science including high-resolution satellite mapping, airborne and terrestrial mobile lidar mapping, earth observation of global change, remote sensing of inland and coastal waters, remote sensing of renewable energy potential, mapping of climate-induced hazards, Internet GIS and Web Mapping, Terrain Analysis in Hydrogeography, geospatial sensor network, and geospatial information technologies for emergency response and disaster management. As a NSERC (National Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada) rated researcher, Dr. Li has published over 150 papers internationally in refereed journals, books and conference proceedings. He is the associate editor of Geomatica and IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing, guest editor of Photogrammetric Engineering and Remote Sensing, International Journal of Remote Sensing, and serves on the editorial board of several international journals. He is a regular reviewer for more than a dozen prestigious international journals and serves on the review panel of the National Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), ISTP Canada as well as the funding agencies of Belgium, Finland, Germany, and USA. Dr. Li has chaired scientific committees of many international conferences.
Dr. Li is an IEEE Senior Member, Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) licensed with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO), an Ontario Land Surveyor (O.L.S.), and an Ontario Land Information Professional (O.L.I.P.) with the Association of Ontario Land Surveyors (AOLS). He has been a National Examiner in Geomatics Engineering for PEO since 2002.
