Research Interests:

My research program is primarily focused on issues related to freight transportation and logistics although I have a broad interest in transportation at all levels.  I’m really intrigued by the flows of people and goods that underpin social and economic interactions and the complex impacts of those flows.  Recent projects include 1) understanding the location factors for logistics firms (led by former graduate student Paul Jakubicek) 2) analyzing planning and economic development dimensions of logistics 3) exploring the potential impacts of Truck Only Lanes (in the GTA) and 4) understanding the role of innovation in transportation gateways (Vancouver). I am actively involved in a number of research and professional groups with an interest in urban freight transportation.

I have an ongoing interest in a range of transportation policy issues and have previously published on subjects including climate change policy, emissions forecasting, impacts of climate change adaptations on freight, regulatory policy, urban freight planning, freight and land use (accessibility), transportation demand management and deregulation of transportation provision.  My graduate students have a diverse range of research topics that involve various elements of transportation, spatial analysis, regional and urban economics and sustainability.   Current graduate student projects include siting Hydrogen fuel stations, Big box retail and transportation emissions, measuring cycling activity, and designing neighbourhoods for active transportation.
