Language Training

Students will receive basic training in one of the local languages spoken in the  field placement country as part of the field placement (INDEV 401) in-country orientation.

Spanish – Students pursuing field placement in developing countries where Spanish is one of the official languages are required to develop conversational proficiency to an intermediate level or higher prior to departure for field placement in 4B term. Students with little or no background in Spanish are advised to start taking Spanish electives in first year through to INDEV 304 Spanish (Language Conservation for Development).    

French – Students pursuing field placement in countries where French is one of the official languages are required to develop conversational proficiency to an intermediate level prior to departure for field placement in 4B term. Students with little or no background in French are advised to start taking French electives in first year through to INDEV 304 French (Language Conservation for Development).

Vietnamese – Students pursuing field placement in Vietnam are required to take INDEV 304 Vietnamese (Language Conservation for Development). No background in Vietnamese is required.
