Jean Andrey
Professor
Geography and
Environmental Management
Director of the Joint Graduate Program

My interest in the environment and sustainability goes back to my farm roots in Bruce County, Ontario. All of my degrees are in Geography, a discipline that I love for its breadth. I completed my undergraduate degree at Wilfrid Laurier University and an M.Sc. (Climatology) at University of Calgary. In the early 1980s, I worked with the Alberta Transportation Department as a road safety analyst, and then I returned to Ontario to complete a PhD at University of Waterloo. I have been a faculty member with University of Waterloo since 1989.
I enjoy teaching, and am honoured to have been recognized by my students and peers through various teaching awards:
Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations Teaching Award 2004
Canadian Association of Geographers Award for Excellence in Teaching Geography 2000
University of Waterloo Distinguished Teacher Award 1995
I regularly teach three undergraduate courses:
On Becoming a Geographer (Geography 100, co-taught with I. McKenzie)
Introduction to Environmental Research Methods (ENVS 178)
Geography of Transportation (Geog 351)
To learn about my research interests and activities , see Weather-Transportation Studies; Risk & Safety; and Sustainable Communities.
