Research Interests:
I was born in St. John's Newfoundland, grew up in Kingston, Ontario and have been a faculty member at the University of Waterloo since 1988. My research explores the social processes that lie behind the transformation of rural space. I am particularly interested in how Canadian towns and villages create place-based identities; specifically, those based on the commodification of local heritage. My research to date has focused on Ontario and British Columbia, but I am currently exploring the transformation of rural spaces along the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundand and Labrador. My teaching is in the field of economic and rural geography and I welcome graduate students in either area.
