Research Interests:
Ian Rowlands has ongoing research activities associated with four major projects.
- First, he is the principal investigator on an OCE- (and partner-) funded project entitled 'Energy Hub Management System'.
- Second, Ian is working on a project entitled 'Power Nap: Developing and Demonstrating Zero-Peak Houses’. This is led by Dr. Guy Newsham at the National Research Council in Ottawa. A brief project description is as follows: 'This project will develop an understanding of the ways in which Canadian homes could become zero peak power consumers, with the goal of demonstrating a practical zero-peak power house; “Zero-peak” means drawing no power from the grid at times of peak system-wide demand. This may be achieved through a combination of more efficient house design, shifting demand to off-peak times with advanced controls and appliances, and local power generation and storage. Load shifting in particular involves technology that supports homeowners in changing their daily patterns of electricity use in convenient and persistent ways.'
- Third, through his association with the Centre for International Governance Innovation, Ian is actively looking at issues of multi-level governance -- particularly with respect to how the United States and Canada manage their common interests in renewable electricity.
- And fourth, Ian is a member of the Solar Buildings Research Network.
