Important Information for New Undergraduate Students

Current Undergraduate Students

Plan Requirements Overview

ERS offers two plans of study leading to a BES degree:  an ERS Honours (4 year) plan and also an ERS Honours Co-op (4 3/4  year) plan.

Degree 'average requirements' are the same whether you're in the ERS Honours Regular or ERS Honours Co-op plan. ERS major average must be 70% and ERS overall average must be 65%.  The number of 0.5 unit courses required to graduate is 40 (equivalent to 20 units). Students in ERS Co-op will also complete four additional professional development courses as part of their Co-op Plan.

Of these 40 courses, 27 courses (13.5 units) must be above 100-level. This means that 13 courses (6.5 units) can be at 100-level. There is no restriction on the number of 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year courses.

Note that ERS core courses are unique to this plan of study and therefore, we will not permit core courses credit for courses taken at another institution.   Students wishing to go on exchange or study elsewhere should plan to stay longer to finish their ERS requirements, or adjust their schedules to ensure they are on campus for core course offerings in the term that they are available.

English Language Proficiency Examination (ELPE) milestone is required for all ERS students to graduate. This must be completed by the end of 2B term or 2nd year. As well, Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) credit is also a required milestone and can be completed on-line.

To remain in good standing, students in both ERS Honours Regular and ERS Honours Co-op plans must maintain an average of 70% in "major" courses (includes ERS and ENVS courses), and 65% overall (all courses).

These requirements are applicable to all ERS students and are in addition to the requisite curriculum schedules.   For students entering ERS in September 2011, click here for Fall 2011 Curriculum Checklist.

A NEW core curriculum schedule began in Fall 2010.  Students who entered ERS in Fall 2010 follow the Fall 2010 Curriculum Checklist .   Note that the new curriculum did not require additional courses be taken, only that substitutions be followed using the new course numbers and titles.  Content has changed slightly in some cases, and substantially in others.  The new curriculum had no effect on the time it would take to complete the degree as the number of courses and the terms offering core courses were unchanged.

To graduate, students must fulfill their term of admission checklist of requirements which are available here: Fall 11, Fall 10, Fall 09,  Fall 08, Fall 07Fall 06, Fall 05

ERS as a 2nd Major (Joint Honours)

Students in other UW honours plans wishing to do a joint honours degree with ERS as the second major are required to complete all ERS core courses, plus THREE (3) ERS/ENV S elective courses. Students can elect to complete ERS 411A/B (formerly ERS 490A/B) or their home department's equivalent Senior Honours Project worth 1.0 units. ERS required averages must be maintained.

Joint Honours with ERS plan must be approved by the Undergraduate Officer in ERS using a 'plan modification' form.

ERS Minor

Students in other honours plans that wish to 'minor' in ERS are required to successfully complete ten ERS courses with a 70% average.  Within these ten courses, ENV S 178, 195, and 200 are permitted.
