*Professor Susan Wismer has received the Award of Excellence in Graduate Student Supervision - Congratulations Susan!

*ERS gets the best students ever!  Doctoral student Nadia Charnia has won the prestigious Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship, announced this month by Prime Minister Stephen Harper - which recognizes outstanding academic achievement and leadership skills. See the University of Waterloo press release here.  Way to go Nadia! 


* We are delighted to congratulate ERS Master’s student Heather Davis, whose contribution was selected as one of the winning oral presentations at this year's Graduate Student Research Conference at the University of Waterloo.  Her presentation, entitled, ‘Advancing triple-bottom-line community economic development (CED) in municipal planning’, took place on Tuesday, 26 April.  Well done, Heather!

*ERS Professor Paul Kay – currently on sabbatical and a visiting professor at the Halbert Centre for Canadian Studies at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem – has his work on the importance of water conservation cited in a recent article in the Toronto Star.  The article can be found online here.  Further information about Prof. Kay’s research can be found here.

*Eric Mallia – a second year MES student in ERS – won the award for best poster at the University of Waterloo’s 3rd Annual Student Colloquium on Climate Change.   Held on 10 and 11 March 2011, Eric’s poster was entitled ‘Exploring Home Electricity Management Strategies as a Climate Change Mitigation Option’.   More information about the Colloquium may be found here (http://www.ic3.uwaterloo.ca/cms/en/events.aspx).  Congratulations Eric!

*Jason Thistlethwaite – PhD student in Global Governance at the University of Waterloo – has just won the Environmental Studies Section’s Graduate Student Paper Award at the International Studies Association Annual Convention 2011 (March 2011, Montreal, QC).  Jason’s paper was entitled ‘The ClimateWise Principles:  An Emerging Climate Change Risk Regime’.  Jason has taught ENVS220 (Environmental Economics) in the Faculty of Environment, and Prof Jennifer Clapp (ERS) serves on his advisory committee.  Congratulations, Jason!

*ERS Professor Rob de Loë was interviewed by CBC News on Tuesday, 1 March 2011 regarding the governance challenges associated with managing Canada’s water issues in light of climate change. The article can be found online here. Further information about Prof. de Loë’s research can be found here.

*Undergraduate class enrollment for Spring term takes place this week:  February 8-12/2011.

*Colin Yates has been selected to receive the 2010-11 Robert Starbird Dorney Award for outstanding doctoral research in applied urban and regional human ecology and environmental management.  A graduate of ERS’s Master’s programme, Colin is pursuing a PhD in UW’s School of Planning, under the supervision of ERS Professor Stephen Murphy and Dr. Brent Wootton (Fleming College).  Colin’s area of interest is ecological impact assessment of constructed wetlands used for waste treatment in far north municipalities.  "Well done, Colin!"

* ERS Prof. Rob de Loe has been honoured with an ‘Award of Excellence in Graduate Supervision’ from the University of Waterloo.  Recognising Rob as ‘an outstanding mentor, champion and role model for graduate students’, he will receive his award at Convocation in June 2011.  This is a richly-deserved award, and the entire Department is delighted for Rob.  More information may be found at http://www.bulletin.uwaterloo.ca/2011/jan/05we.html
